2017 Award Winners Announced at 26th AMSSM Annual Meeting

San Diego, Calif.  – The American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) presented the following awards during its 26th Annual Meeting on May 13, 2017 at the Manchester Grand Hyatt.

Best Overall Research Award – Christina Master, MD – The Use of Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) for Assessing Cognitive Workload after Concussion

Harry Galanty Young Investigator Award – Andrea Pitts, MD – Epinephrine: Is There a Cheaper but Equally Effective Alternative?

The Harry L. Galanty, MD Young Investigator's Award is presented at the Annual Meeting for the most outstanding research presentation by a member who is a sports medicine fellow or who has recently completed fellowship training. The award was established in 2003 to honor Harry Galanty, MD, a charter member of the AMSSM, who passed away in 1999 at the age 36. Dr. Galanty’s contributions to sports medicine combined service and a commitment to teaching and research.

NCAA Research Award – David Siebert, MD – The Incidence and Etiology of Sudden Cardiac Arrest and Death in Competitive Athletes: A 2-year Prospective Study from Three National Centers

The NCAA Award for best research presentation addresses the health and safety issues of college athletes.

Best Overall Case Presentations 

  • Erin Hammer, MD for her case titled, Chest Pain in a High School Athlete.
  • Stessie Dort Zimmerman, MD for her case titled, Leg Numbness with an Interesting Timeline.
