Western Washington Physician Receives 2013 AMSSM Founders Award

San Diego, CA – Warren Howe, MD, was awarded the Founders Award on Saturday, April 20, 2013, at the 22nd annual meeting of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine in San Diego, Calif. The award is not given annually, but is bestowed when AMSSM leadership determines that someone exemplifies the best that a sports medicine physician can be and do.

This past year, Dr. Howe retired as the head team physician at Western Washington University after more than 20 years of service. He pioneered the role of team physician at his institution and modeled his role to others through tireless teaching and service to his athletes. Dr. Jonathan Drezner, Immediate Past President of AMSSM, states, “Warren exemplifies the values, dedication and professionalism that underlie the core of our organization and the field of sports medicine.”

Howe earned his AB at the University of Rochester and later went on to Washington University in St. Louis to graduate with his MD in 1965. He completed his internship at the Philadelphia General Hospital in 1965 and his residency at the University of Rochester from 1969-71.

Howe received the American College of Sports Medicine Citation Award in 2005. He was the head physician at the Class AAA Washington State High School Wrestling Championships from 1978 to 1988 and has been the medical director at the Washington State High School Wrestling Championships since1989.

Howe was named to the Washington State Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame as a contributor in 1991 and was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2003. He was the attending physician at NAIA National Wrestling Championships in 1976 as well as for wrestling and track at the 1990 Seattle Goodwill Games.
