Editor's Comments:
Osteochondromas are the most common type of benign bone tumors. They are a cartilage capped bony projection from the surface of a bone. They typically occur on the humerus and femur and are discovered incidentally on plain film radiographs. There is a very low risk of malignant transformation. Most lesions are pain free and the patient presents secondary to noting the growth. If the osteochondroma causes significant pain or mechanical symptoms, they can be excised. If the lesion grows significantly, it should also be excised. Annual plain film radiographs are recommended for monitoring.
