Patient Presentation:
A 10 year-old female presents with left knee pain after a fall.
History:
The left knee pain started 2 weeks ago after playing soccer. There was no specific injury though pain was severe enough to require crutches. The patient presented to the emergency department after falling onto the same knee at school when her crutches slipped on a wet floor.
Physical Exam:
Upon initial physical exam with the primary care physician, the significant findings were faint ecchymosis to the patella and anterior tenderness of the left knee. Repeat physical exam after referral to orthopedics/sports medicine showed the patient had no effusions and normal range of motion (ROM) in the knees. There was tenderness to palpation at the left patella and patellar tendon with tibial tuberosity tenderness on point of care ultrasound (POCUS) and pain on knee extension.
