Achilles Tendinopathy In A Runner

There is focal thickening of the Achilles tendon on exam. Type of Probe Used: 15-4 mHz Linear Probe SAX Achilles Tendon SAX LAX Achilles Tendon LAX SAX Achilles Tendon SAX LAX Achilles Tendon LAX Interpretation Image Interpretation: LAX image demonstrates a loss of normal fibrillar architecture and focal thickening of the achilles tendon. Accompanied SAX image with hypoechoic areas within the tendon. Findings are consistent with achilles tendinopathy. Teaching Pearl: Midportion achilles tendinopathy is commonly located approximately 2-5 cm proximal to the calcaneal insertion. Focal thickening as well as hypoechoic areas should be assessed when scanning the Achilles.The average tendon thickness is 6 mm in the AP dimenson. Side to side comparison can provide an internal control if only one side is symptomatic, however this should be interpreted with caution as asymptomatic tendinopathy can occur.
