Working Diagnosis:
Patella Tendon Rupture

Treatment:
The patient was placed in a knee immobilizer brace and orthopedic surgery consultation was obtained. The patient was evaluated by orthopedic surgery.

Outcome:
Surgical repair was performed followed by intensive physical therapy and rehabilitation. The patient recovered well and is back to normal physical activity without restrictions.

Author's Comments:
It is important to recognize a patella tendon rupture in athletes because surgical intervention is required for full recovery to normal physical activity. Timely orthopedic surgery is necessary because it improves outcomes and delays in surgical intervention make the procedure more difficult, mostly due to tendon retraction and scar formation.

Editor's Comments:
Patella tendon ruptures in athletes require timely orthopedic surgery consultation in order to prevent delays in return to function and activity. Bedside musculoskeletal and point-of-care ultrasound may assist in rapid diagnosis and confirmation in locations where an MRI may not be readily available. However, it is important to recognize that scanning technique and acquisition of images is highly user-dependent.
