LEAWOOD, Kan. – "Heads Up to Clinicians: Addressing Concussion in Sports among Kids and Teens” is a new free online training program released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), with support from the National Football League (NFL) and the CDC Foundation. The training tool will provide healthcare professionals with information they need to assist in the recognition and management of concussions in young athletes.

Several national societies had representatives contribute to the final project. The American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) was represented by: Andrew Gregory, MD, Team Physician at Vanderbilt University and current AMSSM Board of Directors Member; Margot Putukian, MD, Team Physician at Princeton University, Past President of the AMSSM; and Stan Herring, MD, Director of Spine, Sports and Musculoskeletal Medicine for the University of Washington Medicine Health System and co-medical director of the Seattle Sports Concussion Program.

“If you are a pediatrician who takes care of young athletes with head injuries, this course is designed for you. This course will bring you up to date on the latest advancements for recognition and treatment of concussion in athletes,” said Dr. Gregory.

The goal of this course is to prepare health care professionals to diagnose and manage concussions on the sidelines, in their office, training room, or in the emergency department, in order to help improve patient outcomes. The program covers several important points: Examining current research on what may occur to the brain after concussion; Understanding why young people are at increased risk; Exploring acute concussion assessment and individualized management for young athletes; Learning about the 5-Step Return to Play progression and helping athletes safely return to school and play. The free course features interviews with leading experts, dynamic graphics, and case studies. For more, see http://www.preventingconcussions.org.

“The CDC on-line program is geared for educating health care professionals on the importance of recognizing, assessing and managing concussion,” said Dr. Putukian. “It is comprehensive and should provide up to date information for health care providers and enhance the care provided to young athletes with concussive injury.”
