Patient Presentation:
14 year old male high school football player with history of shin splints presented to primary care office for bilateral shin pain lasting longer than 6 months. He experienced shin pain during the past football season but did not seek medical attention. He rested for about two months after football season, but his pain worsened upon resuming offseason football conditioning and he noticed bumps on both of his anterior shins that would swell after hard workouts.
History:
No significant medical, surgical, or family history.
Physical Exam:
Tenderness to palpation noted over visible protrusions on the anterior distal 1/3 of each tibia. Right protrusion more prominent than left. Tenderness greater over the left protrusion than the right. No swelling, erythema. Sensation and strength intact bilaterally.
