American Medical Society for Sports Medicine
For Immediate Release May 12, 2011


SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Brian Bales, MD was co-awarded the annual Best Case Presentation at the 20th Annual Meeting of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, in Salt Lake City, Utah held April 30 – May 4, 2011.


Dr. Bales’ case, “A Stinger” was chosen from the 24 cases presented at the annual meeting. His presentation discussed the case of a 19 year-old junior college safety who sustained a right T1 ventral nerve root avulsion while tackling a running back during a game. AMSSM had over 195 cases submitted this year, said Dr. Suzanne Hecht, Chair of the Research Committee. A plaque and a $500 prize are awarded each year to the presentation deemed most outstanding by a review panel of physicians on the Research Committee.


Dr. Bales is a second year resident in Emergency Medicine at the University of Cincinnati. His co-author on the case was Tho Hang, MD.


The American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) is a multi-disciplinary organization of physicians whose members are dedicated to education, research, collaboration and fellowship within the field of Sports Medicine. Founded in 1991, the AMSSM is now comprised of over 1,800 Sports Medicine Physicians whose goal is to provide a link between the rapidly expanding core of knowledge related to sports medicine and its application to patients in a clinical setting.
