For Immediate Release May 12, 2011

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Chris Madden, MD, was awarded the 2011 Founders Award at the 20th Annual Meeting of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, in Salt Lake City, Utah, from April 30-May 4, 2011.

The award is not given annually, but is bestowed when AMSSM leadership determines that someone exemplifies the best that a Sports Medicine Physician can be and do. Dr. Madden has been instrumental in getting CMS to recognize Sports Medicine as an independent specialty. As of April 4, 2011 CMS established the specialty designation code 23 for Sports Medicine Physicians.

Madden practices Family and Sports Medicine in Longmont, Colo. He served two terms on the Board of Directors and as the Chair of the Economics committee. Presenting the award, AMSSM President Dr. Fran O’Connor said, “Chris Madden was the driving force in helping our specialty gain recognition for the services we provide. It was through his hard work, and those members of our economics committee, that we were able to accomplish this.

Dr. Madden said, “I am humbled and thankful for the recognition of our efforts with the Founders.” Madden continued, “Hopefully we have established something that will offer our profession solid ground as we move forward. The Economics Committee members who worked on this deserve equal thanks, they were responsible for the data collection, and section writing that allowed us to present a comprehensive proposal.”

Dr. Madden has practiced at Longs Peak Family Practice since 2000. He graduated with distinction from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln in 1991, his M.D. with distinction from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha in 1996, where he was also a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha honorary medical society. He then completed Family Medicine residency at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha in 1999, where he served as a clinical chief resident. Dr. Madden then completed a Sports Medicine fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center at Shadyside Hospital in 2000. He is board certified in both Family Medicine and Sports Medicine.
