Fellows Selected for 2017 AMSSM Traveling Fellowship to the UK

The American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) has selected Kenneth Barnes, MD, MSc and Mederic Hall, MD to serve as Junior Traveling Fellows for AMSSM's 2017 International Traveling Fellowship program tour to the United Kingdom. Drs. Barnes and Hall will join AMSSM Founder and Past President E. Lee Rice, DO, who will serve as Senior Traveling Fellow for the Sept. 30 - Oct. 14, 2017 tour.

The Traveling Fellowship program offers an opportunity for academic exchange and clinical immersion for sports medicine physicians to teach and learn sports medicine on a global level.

During the first half of the exchange, International Visiting Fellow Simon Kemp, MA, MB, BS, MRCGP, MSc (SEM), FFSEM, will visit sports medicine centers in Los Angeles, Seattle and the San Francisco area before serving as a keynote speaker at the 2017 AMSSM Annual Meeting in San Diego from May 8-13, 2017.

The second half of the exchange will include stops this fall at sports medicine centers around the United Kingdom and conclude with a chance for the three AMSSM Traveling Fellows to present at the joint meeting of the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine and British Association of Sport and Exercise Medicine.

Dr. Barnes is a sports medicine physician at Greensboro Orthopaedics in Greensboro, NC. He specializes in musculoskeletal sports medicine focusing on the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions and injuries. Prior to fellowship, Dr. Barnes completed training in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. Dr. Barnes has a special interest in non-operative fracture management and sport-related concussions. His current research is examining the impact of concussion history on balance, cognitive function, sensory processing, brain electrical activity and the influence of various genetic markers in both collegiate and high school student-athletes.

"I have gained a vast amount of knowledge with formal education in three different countries," said Dr. Barnes, who moved to the Toronto area from the U.S. at a young age, obtained a Master's in Orthopaedic Biomechanics in Canada, went to medical school in Ireland and completed internship, residency and fellowship back in the U.S. "This has prepared me for this exciting international fellowship opportunity of academic and clinical collaboration in the UK."

Dr. Hall is a sports medicine physician in Iowa City, IA. He specializes in diagnosis and treatment of tendon disorders and other sport related musculoskeletal problems with a special interest in the endurance athlete. He is an internationally recognized expert in diagnostic ultrasound imaging and ultrasound guided procedures and is the Director of Musculoskeletal and Sports Ultrasound at University of Iowa Sports Medicine. Dr. Hall is board certified in sports medicine and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He is a team physician for the University of Iowa Hawkeyes and the U.S. Ski Team.

"My experience with both high level diagnostic sonographic imaging and cutting edge minimally invasive treatments for tendon and other musculoskeletal disorders will be of great interest to our colleagues in the United Kingdom," said Dr. Hall. "I am confident that the relationships forged during the traveling fellowship can be used to foster future collaboration between AMSSM and our international colleagues."
