SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Jim Barrett, MD a Professor at the University of Oklahoma presented “Evidence-Based Non-Surgical Osteoarthritis: What is the evidence” at the 20th Annual American Medical Society for Sports Medicine Meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah held April 30 – May 4, 2011. The conference, with more than 1,000 sports medicine physicians from across the United States and 5 countries around the world, featured several lectures on advances in sports medicine. Dr. Barrett reviewed the current evidence available in the world-wide literature on the treatment of osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is a growing problem in the United States given the expanding elderly population. Barrett described how there are some complementary alternative medications that may be helpful in this population. Treatments such as Avacado/Soy and Glucosamine “do show some positive evidence in decreasing pain in this population.” He also discussed the positive evidence for the injectable treatment with viscosupplements, but cautioned that “it is best used in those with mild to moderate osteoarthritis with an effusion.” Dr. Barrett is a Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma Health Science Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He serves as the Sports Medicine Fellowship Director, and Team Physician. The American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) is a multi-disciplinary organization of physicians whose members are dedicated to education, research, collaboration and fellowship within the field of Sports Medicine. Founded in 1991, the AMSSM is now comprised of over 1,800 Sports Medicine Physicians whose goal is to provide a link between the rapidly expanding core of knowledge related to sports medicine and its application to patients in a clinical setting. |
